Department 19 is the first book in the Department 19 series by Will Hill.

Description

In a secret supernatural battle that's been raging for over a century, the stakes have just been raised – and they're not wooden anymore.

DEPARTMENT 6 IS THE ARMY
DEPARTMENT 12 IS MI5
DEPARTMENT 19 IS THE REASON YOU'RE ALIVE

When Jamie Carpenter's mother is kidnapped by strange creatures, he finds himself dragged into Department 19, the government's most secret agency.

Fortunately for Jamie, Department 19 can provide the tools he needs to find his mother, and to kill the vampires who want him dead. But unfortunately for everyone, something much older is stirring, something even Department 19 can't stand up against… Jamie Carpenter's life will never be the same. His father is dead, his mother is missing, and he was just rescued by an enormous man named Frankenstein. Jamie is brought to Department 19, where he is pulled into a secret organization responsible for policing the supernatural, founded more than a century ago by Abraham Van Helsing and the other survivors of Dracula. Aided by Frankenstein's monster, a beautiful vampire girl with her own agenda, and the members of the agency, Jamie must attempt to save his mother from a terrifyingly powerful vampire.

Trivia

Before being attacked by Larissa, Matt is writing an essay for William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar.

The book primarily takes place in October 2009 (2009 because it takes place 2 years after the prologue, and October because it takes place 3 months before the events of 'The Rising', which takes place in January 2010).

===Continuity Errors===

  • In Chapter 11, "The Morning After", Frankenstein tells Jamie that Henry Carpenter was unimpressed with John Carpenter's decision to re-enlist in the RAF in 1939 in order to fight in the Second World War. However, in Chapter 17, "The Black Sheep", Henry Carpenter is stated to have died in 1922, meaning that he could not possibly have been unimpressed with John Carpenter's decision in 1939, as he had been dead for 17 years.
  • The date given for Larissa being turned is the 24th July 2004 (Chapter 28, "All the Fun of the Fair"). However, just 3 chapters later in Chapter 31, "One Rule For Everyone", Larissa says that she was turned 4 years ago. This cannot be the case, as the book takes place in October 2009, meaning that she should have been turned for 5 years and 3 months at this point, if the date given in Chapter 28 is correct.
